South African National Parks (SANParks) has launched a Stokvel & Travel Club* programme that will be offering members of Stokvel &Travel Club’s discounts at certain National Parks. 

Managing Executive: Tourism Development and Marketing, Hapiloe Sello, said, “Stokvel & Travel Club membership boasts many different types of personalities and profiles, ranging from the ordinary grandmother to the high-earning CEOs of companies and large corporate and public sector institutions. There are over 800 000 registered Stokvels in South Africa, and we would like to offer them and special interest groups the chance to visit a National Park in South Africa within their Stokvel & Travel Club at a discounted tariff and favourable payment regimes.”

SANParks created this new product as part of the overall Marketing strategy of growing specific non-traditional markets. “This will diversify our offering and grow our visitor base. We will be offering this special to both registered and non-registered Stokvels. All that the group needs to do is to register with SANParks as a Stokvel.”

SANParks hopes to position itself as the primary holiday destination amongst the domestic market, raise awareness of SANParks brand as the leading environmental science and conservation agency in South Africa, increase the number of black visitors to the National Parks, establish a new tradition of holidaying annually at nature-based tourism facilities particularly SANParks destinations and to become an inclusive contributor in the tourism industry.

In conclusion Sello said, “A travel club unites a group of people together with the desire to travel. EDITORS NOTE: * A stokvel/travel club is a saving group of individuals, couples or families consisting of 10 or more members with a common goal.  Members regularly contribute an agreed amount to a central fund on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis. 

The difference between SANParks current Group Travel Category vs the new Stokvel and Travel Clubs category is that unlike the traditional Group travel category, that usually is more commercial by nature (e.g. conferences, etc.) where 10 or more units are booked, our new Stokvel & Travel Club category  aims to attract  groups of ten or more people, that typically travel together and/or  regularly contribute money towards a collective visit to our national parks in future. The payment requirements for the latter category have been adapted accordingly.
