The annual Castle Lite Barney Barnato Golf Tournament starts this weekend at the Kimberley Golf Club. The eight day golfing spectacular is being played for the 26th time and will see over 500 different golfers from as far as Australia taking part.
The tournament is played according to the Individual Stableford format and commemorating one of Kimberley’s most memorable mining legends. The Barney Barnato tournament was established in 1990 and has become the largest amateur golf tournament of its kind on the African continent.
A sizzling entertainment line-up throughout the competition will also keep golfers busy off the course. Performers include Bianca, HANA, the Garth Taylor Band, TEE KAY, LIESEL + LEE ANNE, and Dantanio.
According to Sharron Lewis, CEO of the Northern Cape Tourism Authority, this tournament celebrates two important factors in the Northern Cape’s tourism portfolio, namely the ability to host world-class sporting events and the diverse tourism offerings of the province. “The tournament pays tribute to a man, who played a vital role in the proud mining tradition of the province and helped to establish Kimberley as the Diamond City. At the same time, we have also proven that the Northern Cape can successfully host events of such calibre that it sets the benchmark on the continent. I would like to extend a warm Northern Cape welcome to all the players and hope that they will have the opportunity to celebrate Kimberley’s amazing tourism offerings during their stay,” mentions Lewis.
