Experience the Northern Cape, South Africa

There’s another long weekend coming up, at the end of this month. Why not make the most of it and explore the Northern Cape’s Kokerboom Food and Wine Route? Whether you’re looking for a family getaway, a leisurely day trip or thrilling desert adventures, you’ll find it all here.

The route, aptly named after the quiver tree commonly found in the Kalahari region, will take you through towns such as Keimoes, Kanoneiland, Kenhardt, Augrabies, Upington and Kakamas.

In these towns you’ll find wine cellars, dried fruits, nuts and home-made cheese producers. Ever tried Kalahari sushi? You’ll find it at the Kalahari Gateway Hotel and Conference Centre in Kakamas.

If you’re a wine lover, a stopover at Orange River Cellars in Upington is a must. The in-house wine tasting centre has a range of award-winning wines and while you sip away and enjoy the snacks, the little ones will enjoy themselves in the kids’ play area.

For those who want to explore the natural beauty along this route, the Augrabies Falls National Park is home to indigenous plants and animal species including springbok, black-backed jackal, caracal, bat-eared fox and leopard.

Viewing decks allow visitors to take in the majestic 56m-high Augrabies Falls, which locals refer to as the “the place of great noise”. This is because of the thunderous noise the falls make when the Orange River overflows following rainfall.
