KDC GOES VIRTUAL WITH SKATEBOARDING FOR HOPE

South Africa’s top skateboarders will join the best young talent from the Northern Cape for the Skateboarding for Hope tournament, to be held at the Kimberley Skate Plaza in Kimberley on 27 March 2021.

Narrative for Hope…

Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it and to work for it and to fight for it.” – Barack Obama

South Africa’s biggest skateboarding tournament is fully going virtual when this week’s Skateboarding for Hope tournament is streamed live to audiences from the Diamond City.

The event takes place at the Kimberley Skate Plaza on Saturday 27 March 2021, with an overall prize purse of R100 000. The best young skating talent from the Northern Cape will compete against the nation’s biggest names for some of the best prizes in the sport.

The Northern Cape MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Abraham Vosloo, shared his sentiments about hosting the virtual skateboarding event.

“We feel we have managed the Covid-19 crisis well; we are here to show proof of life – we are a modern society open for business and bringing hope to South Africa. In a world that has been brought to its knees, Skateboarding for Hope wants to celebrate the hope for tomorrow that still lives in us.

“The Northern Cape is the definitive home for extreme sports in South Africa, and has proven credentials and events that can attest to that status. The province prides itself on innovation and will be embarking on a journey of modernisation and digitisation. This event is one of the first of its kind and will be a marker for future events and interventions in the province,” said MEC Vosloo.

It is in this spirit that the Northern Cape brings this free event to the towns and even the most rural parts of the province on its newly built Wi-Fi networks, and then to the wider world on a variety of media platforms.

Our nation and the planet are plagued by economic uncertainty and a lack of economic opportunities right now, and this event has always brought not just hope but real jobs and economic activity.

Skateboarding for Hope will usher in a new broadcast format too, with content going directly to communities on a variety of platforms.

We’re introducing a new way to enjoy skateboarding, virtually – evolving the “new normal” for sport and sports broadcasting. The live-streaming broadcast link will be available on the Real KDC and Northern Cape Tourism Authority social media platforms.
