It can be tough to find fun, family-friendly activities to do in the school holidays. But if you’re visiting the Northern Cape with your family soon, here’s a list of adventures you and your loved ones can enjoy all year round.
Visit the Big Hole
One of the Northern Cape’s biggest attractions, the Big Hole in Kimberley is perfect for a fun day out with family and friends. The opencast mine offers a selection of activities, from guided tours to an incredible underground mine simulation. Kids will enjoy the view from the outdoor platform that gives the best views of the Big Hole, while finding out so much about our country’s mining history. Hop on the vintage tram that’s been in operation since 1887, and go on a quick tour around the premises.
Don’t miss the Namaqualand flower season
Wildflower season is a popular annual event in the Northern Cape and a huge boost to the tourism industry. While the flowers bloom at their own pace and are largely dependent on the rains, the season starts around late July/August – but they don’t last long, so you need to move quickly! Take your budding little gardeners to see some of the Northern Cape’s beautiful indigenous flora this year.
Enjoy a fun horse ride
Ever wanted to enjoy a horse ride with your family or loved ones? There are a few venues around the Northern Cape that offer horse-riding activities, from riding around the farm to your kids participating in riding camps. Contact Namaqua Horse Trails or the Tswalu Private Reserve to find out more about their offerings and to book your spot today.
Camp at the Tankwa Karoo National Park
Not to be mistaken with Tankwa Town, home to AfrikaBurn, the Tankwa Karoo National Park is a nature reserve with an abundance of fauna and flora. Located around 100km from Sutherland, the park is perfect for camping with family members and friends. The park is home to a variety of bird species and is perfect for birdwatching. Bring along your comfy shoes and go for a hike with the little ones while exploring the area.
Do note, there is no cellphone reception in the park.
Get a bird’s-eye view from a hot-air balloon
If you’re heading past the Augrabies Falls for a holiday, see the region from new heights in a hot-air balloon. A bucket-list experience you should definitely try out, hot-air balloons are a peaceful way to spend an afternoon with your family. Do note, this activity is best reserved for older children who will be able to see out of the hot-air balloon.
We hope to see you in our province soon!
