The skies above rural town of Carnarvon in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape will literally be buzzing this weekend during the annual Carnarvon Fly-In.  This mini air show and aviation festival is considered to be one of the most spectacular of its kind in the country and promises visitors exciting entertainment from 7-8 June 2013.

The Carnarvon Aero Club in conjunction with the Northern Cape Tourism Authority will once again host this unique celebration filled with all-day aircraft displays and aviation activities as well as food and refreshment stalls and great, live entertainment.   A record number of aircraft has already booked for this year’s event and organisers are expecting that more than eighty aircraft will form part of the weekend’s activities.

Aviation activities include amazing fly by shows, various displays, flights for the public by the George Flight Training College, radio-controlled model aircrafts, public access to pilot briefings, presentations by air traffic controllers and safety officers and guided tours to view the aircraft.  Visitors are also in for a special surprise with a unique aircraft set to make an appearance.

The exciting line-up for the weekend is jam-packed with live music and dance performances, drum majorettes, talent shows, beauty contests, fashion parades and a kite flying contest.  Food, refreshments and arts & crafts stalls will be open daily from 09h00 – 21h00.  The bar opens daily from 10h00 – 23h59 with a big screen facility screening presentations and major games for sports lovers.  Entrance to the grounds costs R5 for adults and R2 for scholars.

On Friday night, legendary local artist Boeta Gammie will be in action supported by local R&B dancers, a choir, female vocalists and a rap artist.  The show starts at 19h30 and tickets cost R40 for adults and R20 for scholars.  Meals and refreshments will be served at the food stalls.

On Saturday evening, celebrity singer Ray Dylan will be the guest artist at the dance.  Tickets are R100 for adults and R50 for scholars.  Meals and refreshments will be available from the food stalls.  Judges from Northern Cape Tourism, Orange River Wines, Bonina Liqueurs and Ocean Calamari will be responsible for the crowning of Mr and Ms Fly-In during the dance.  Great prizes and special trophies are up for grabs.

The open stage will also host a drum majorette performance, the ATKV award-winning Kareeberg riel dancers, Dancing Queens, R&B dancers and various local Idols competition winners during the course of the weekend.  A junior Mr and Ms Fly-In fashion parade for youngsters between the ages of 1 and 10 years is sure to draw the crowds.

The SKA project has sponsored a telescope and three free flights for the kite-flying competition as well as free entry for the first 1000 local scholars.
