The Van Zylsrus Hotel is a small but comfortable luxury hotel located in the Kalahari farming community of of Van Zylsrus. The hotel’s history dates back to the early 1950s, when it was a small shop catering for local farmers and travellers who passed through on their way to neighbouring Botswana. Before long, weary travellers indicated the need for accommodation and rooms were soon added to the shop, a liquor licence was obtained and the establishment began trading as the Gemsbok Hotel. Many tourists, hunters and travellers would go on to have interesting stories to tell about the old hotel. In 2006, new owners purchased the then run-down hotel and refurbished it, and the Van Zylsrus Hotel opened its doors to the public in December 2007. Today, the boutique hotel still stands as an oasis of the Kalahari, boasting antique art and decor recovered from the debris of the old hotel.
