Vanderkloof is named after the original farm on which the dam was constructed. The former name of the Dam, P.K. Le Roux Dam was named after the former Minister of Water Affairs who for many years campaigned for the development of the Orange River. Recently the name Vanderkloof was decided on for both the dam and the town to avoid confusion. The Orange River Project was the larges engineering and water conservation project ever attempted in South Africa. This combined storage and diversion dam also incorporates the Vanderkloof hydro-electric power station which is connected to Escom's national distribution network. The dam was officially opened on the 17 November 1977 by the former Prime Minister, Mr. B.J. Voster.
The 8000 ha Rolfontein Nature reserve almost surrounds the town and it houses more than 10 different species of antelope, 142 Avifauna and rich variety of flora.
The 13866 ha surface area of the reservoir and the 3255 million cub meter of water housed 10 (recorded) species of fish.
Please visit our town and experience the warmth hospitality of the area.
