What to expect at the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
South Africa is known for having incredible natural habitats with a sprawling selection of indigenous fauna and flora. There are several conservation spaces in and around the country aimed at preserving our environments.
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park incorporates the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana and the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in the Northern Cape province. It is one of the biggest wildlife reserves around, spanning 38 000km2. We’ve put together a guide of what you can look forward to when visiting this huge nature reserve.
See the indigenous wildlife
Nature photographers are in for a treat at the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The reserve is home to a variety of fauna and flora. Spot a black-maned lion or see a cheetah prowling around. If you’re just coming out for a day visit, do note that riding through the park will take up a large chunk of time. Don’t forget the sunscreen and a hat.
Go hiking with friends
Avid hikers can join the !Xerry Wilderness Trail, a two-day tour departing from Nossob. Wear sturdy shoes, bring along some sunscreen and stay hydrated. The trail is a two-day, two-night event and is self-catering. Guests will also need to bring along camping equipment, including chairs, torches, braai wood and sleeping bags.
Camping under the stars
Love roughing it outdoors? You can set up camp at one of the many sites at the park. Do note that there are set rules that visiting campers need to abide by. You will need to bring your own firewood and drinking water supplies where necessary. Alternatively, you can book a spot at the !Xaus Lodge owned by the Khomani San and Mier communities. The lodge is completely off the grid and the only accommodation that allows morning walks on the premises.
Ride around the 4x4 trails
Due to the park’s terrain, some parts of the nature reserve can only be accessed via 4x4. If you’re an adrenaline junkies who loves a bit of adventure, the park offers a variety of trails which will certainly test the endurance of any vehicle. Gear up and enjoy the incredible views with your loved ones.
Make the most of the unique attractions the Northern Cape has to offer, all year round. We hope to see you in our beautiful province soon.
