HIKING

Like much of South Africa, the Northern Cape offers a myriad of diverse hiking trails, with soul tugging scenery across vast expanses of open desert plains or through mazes of rocky strata in mountains and ravines.

A rare opportunity to see big cats and other game on foot is provided by the !Xerry Wilderness Hiking Trail in the Kgalagadi Transfronteir Park, where hikers walk with an armed guide through this wild desert wilderness. The Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail (5 day hike) in the Ai/ Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is a very rewarding trail for those fit enough to tackle it. Other overnight hikes in this Park include the Vensterval Trail, Lelieshoek-Oemsberg Trail and Kodaspiek Trail. Oorlogskloof Nature Resrve, near to Niewoudtville also has some very popular trails which range from day hikes to 5 day overnight trails. The Voetspoor Trail (pictured above) winds through the Karoo Landscape near Loxton (Tel 0533812 ask for 1522).

The Kokerboom Hiking Trail leads through the kokerboom (quiver tree) forest which is comprised of between four- and five-thousand quiver trees. This trail is situated about 8km south of Kenhardt on the main route to Cape Town.
